Mondrian ha sviluppato questa griglia con nastro adesivo commerciale. Clues come cluster di fori pushpin, contorni di matita e patch non verniciati mostrano come l'artista ha regolato la composizione nel tempo, prestando particolare attenzione a come le bande si sovrappongono. Il fatto che aveva già cominciato a sostituire il nastro con la vernice suggerisce che il lavoro era vicino ad essere finito. A differenza del carbone, il nastro adesivo si presta al cambiamento e alla variazione, e ha permesso a Mondrian di sperimentare indefinitamente. Questo lavoro incompiuto, fatto un anno dopo essersi immigrato negli Stati Uniti, documenta come gradualmente ha cominciato a scambiare le bande nere delle sue immagini precedenti per quelle colorate - una risposta ottimista, forse, alla sua fuga da una zona di guerra europea.
