Questo grande dipinto di Pieter Brueghel il Giovane mostra una processione di persone con Cristo che trasporta la croce al centro. La processione si sta dirigendo verso la collina del Golgota, dove si svolge la crocifissione. I cieli scuri sopra la collina sottolineano la natura oscura dell'evento (Luca 23: 44-49). Veronica con la vernica e l'utile Simone di Cireno sono raffigurati vicino a Cristo. Grieving dall'albero sulla destra sono sua madre Maria e Maria Maddalena, che è identificato dal suo vaso di unguento. I due ladri vengono portati sulla collina su un carrello. Ciò che colpisce di questo panorama paesaggistico è la vista di una città fiamminga tardo medievale, con l'unico riferimento ai tempi biblici essendo un grande edificio rotondo, destinato a rappresentare il tempio di Gerusalemme. Brueghel il Giovane ha seguito l'usanza di mettere una storia biblica in un ambiente contemporaneo. C'è una notevole inconsistenza nella croce di pietra appena sopra Cristo, che costituisce un riferimento monumentale ad un evento che – in vista della scena in primo piano – non è ancora iniziato.
