Questo dipinto di Pieter Lastman, uno dei più significativi pittori della storia olandese all'inizio del XVII secolo, raffigura un momento di tradimento e inganno. Il re dell'Antico Testamento Davide, che siede nello splendore regale, ha commesso adulterio con Bathsheba, moglie di Uriah, uno dei suoi soldati più leali. Per mascherare la sua cattiva sorte, David tiene una lettera per Uriah di portare al suo comandante, Joab. La lettera istruisce Joab a mandare Uriah nella parte più feroce della battaglia in modo che venga ucciso. Lastman, che insegnò sia Jan Lievens che Rembrandt van Rijn come dipingere soggetti drammatici tratti dalla Bibbia o dalla mitologia, basando questo dipinto sul Libro biblico di Samuele (2 Samuele 11).
