Lely fu il preeminente ritrattista della corte inglese nella seconda metà del XVII secolo, riempiendo il posto vacante lasciato dalla morte precoce di Van Dyck. La sua somiglianza con le sorelle capel aristocratiche, un superbo esempio dei caratteristici drappeggi scintillanti di Lely e dei toni della carne perlascente, rende omaggio sia alla bellezza dei sitter che ai loro risultati. Maria, a sinistra, sarebbe diventata un grande patrono della ricerca botanica, mentre Elizabeth mostra uno dei suoi dipinti di fiori sulla destra.
