Secondo la storia, Clara è stata abbandonata quando era una bambina in India, dopo che sua madre è stata uccisa da cacciatori indiani. Fu poi adottata dal direttore della Compagnia Olandese delle Indie Orientali, che la vendette a Douvement van der Meer, capitano olandese del mare, che la portò in Olanda nel 1740. Van der Meer ha iniziato a esporre pubblicamente Clara al suo ritorno in Belgio, e ha avuto così successo che ha visitato tutta l'Europa con i rinoceronti. Longhi ha dipinto due versioni di questo dipinto, che sono quasi esattamente le stesse, tranne per gli uomini in primo piano, che in una versione sono mascherati, l'altra versione smascherata.
