Ogni figura è accompagnata da un attributo: ai piedi della Fede un cane, un simbolo comune di fedeltà; ai piedi della Carità un simbolico pelicano del sacrificio di Cristo; e ai piedi della Speranza una fenice, che simboleggia la risurrezione di Cristo. La serie di figure allegoriche, viste contro un paesaggio continuo, era probabilmente destinata a decorare la parte posteriore di uno spalliere (una panca ad alta schiena o un letto diurno) o ad essere impostata in un'incessante.
