A metà del XIV secolo un'associazione – la Confraternita dei Blackheads – fu formata a Tallinn e Riga e portata avanti fino al 1940. Ha riunito mercanti non sposati, proprietari di navi e stranieri che erano attivi in Livonia (attuale Estonia e Lettonia). Erano anche collezionisti di opere d'arte. Lo snuffbox storicamente è dalla loro collezione. È stato realizzato presso la fabbrica Piotr e Alexander Lukutin in Russia in una tecnica di lacca nera.
