Qiu Ying era un pittore professionista che visse e lavorò a Suzhou durante il fiorente XVI secolo della città. All'epoca, le divisioni sociali tra le élite educate e i pittori professionisti potevano a volte essere difficili da attraversare, ma Qiu Ying riuscì a mescolarsi con il cerchio di Wen Zhengming nonostante il fatto che non condividesse la loro vasta formazione letteraria.
