Il soggetto e le immagini di questo dipinto derivano da una composizione attribuita alla dinastia Tang (618–907) artista Liang Lingzan che è ora nella raccolta del Museo d'Arte Municipale di Osaka. Il dipinto raffigura le divinità dei Cinque Pianeti, che corrispondono ai cinque elementi primari—legno (Jupiter), fuoco (Mars), terra (Saturno), metallo (Venus), e acqua (Mercury)—e le ventiotto costellazioni dello zodiaco cinese. Qiu Ying, un bell'artista a suo diritto, era anche famoso come un esperto copyist di dipinti precedenti. Tali copie erano molto apprezzate da collezionisti e altri artisti che potrebbero non avere accesso agli originali.
