Uno dei dieci dipinti che Ravi Varma inviò alla International Columbian Exposition per l'arte, l'artigianato e l'industria a Chicago nel 1893-1894. Ravi Varma ha ricevuto due medaglie e molti diplomi per esporre il suo lavoro lì. Anche detto Povertà, questo lavoro esprime la dura realtà dell'India, la vita difficile dei sottoprevili che spendono la loro vita sotto il sole caldo e accecante, vulnerabile agli elementi, cantando e pregando per il loro sostentamento. Esposta perennemente al sole duro è forse il motivo per cui gli zingari sono scuri di colore, così diversi dalle delicate bellezze di classe superiore in pelle leggera in altri dipinti Ravi Varma.
