In questo dipinto, Ruben raffigura il momento in cui un servo taglia i capelli di Samson, la fonte della sua grande potenza, mentre dorme, dopo di che viene arrestato dai soldati filistei, che possono essere visti attraverso la porta sullo sfondo del dipinto. Il dipinto è stato commissionato dal consigliere di Anversa, Nicholas Rockox, per la sua casa di città. Alla sua morte, il dipinto divenne parte della Collezione del Liechtenstein a Vienna, insieme all'altro capolavoro di Rubens Il Massacro degli Innocenti. Fu erroneamente attribuito a Gerard von Honthorst, pittore fiammingo, contemporaneo di Rubens, che, come Rubens, era anche fortemente influenzato dalle opere di Caravaggio.
