La fabbrica di porcellana, aperta nel 1743 nei boschi di Capodimonte, fu costituita dal re di Napoli, Carlo di Borbone (1716-1788) e, probabilmente, dalla moglie, la principessa Maria Amalia di Sassonia, nipote di Augusto II il Forte, fondatore della fabbrica Meissen. Visse relativamente breve, perché nel 1759 il re ascese al trono di Spagna, e prese i lavoratori specializzati e i modelli con lui per iniziare la fabbrica di Buen Ritiro a Madrid. Le opere scultoree di Capodimonte hanno dato particolare impulso all’attività del modellatore fiorentino Giuseppe Gricci, che ha fatto gruppi religiosi, scene amorose e maschere della Commedia dell’Arte. Le opere sono caratterizzate dal loro uso di porcellana a base morbida, a causa della mancanza di kaolin.
