Secondo la mitologia greca, la principessa Andromeda doveva essere sacrificata per salvare la sua terra da un vorace mostro marino. Dopo essere stata incatenata ad una roccia in attesa del suo destino, fu salvata dall'eroe greco Perseo. Piuttosto che dipingere l'intera storia, Rembrandt raffigurava solo la terribile Andromeda. Fare l’emozione il motivo principale della scena è caratteristico del lavoro di Rembrandt. Il naturalismo con cui ha dipinto il corpo nudo è lontano dagli ideali classici della bellezza.
