Numerosi dipinti e disegni mostrano che Rembrandt era più interessato a se stesso come soggetto, fin dai primi tempi e bene alla vecchiaia, che qualsiasi altro artista del suo periodo. Questo ritratto con un berretto di velluto è una manifestazione della sua autostima: aveva sposato Saskia Uylenburgh nel 1634, e così sopra la sua stazione. Mostra anche che aveva familiarità con il famoso autoritratto Rubens (Castello Windsor). Ma a differenza di Rubens, Rembrandt non si presenta come un gentiluomo onorevole, ma come un pittore consolidato, che sta basando la sua auto-rappresentazione sull'arte, piuttosto allora lo status sociale. Il berretto è anche uno degli attributi tipici del pittore, e la svolta allerta della testa verso lo spettatore e lo sguardo riflessivo fuori dal quadro era stato standard per la ritrattistica degli artisti dal Rinascimento.
