Una donna si appoggia sulla porta a metà aperta, guardando lo spettatore con la testa leggermente inclinata. La posa informale e il vestito – un cotto di casa, rosso scuro in posti e legato casualmente sopra il sottobosco bianco basso – suggeriscono un rapporto familiare tra pittore e modello. Per questo motivo la donna è stata identificata come il suo compagno successivo Hendrickje Stoffels. Il fatto che Rembrandt avesse anche lei sedersi per altri dipinti sostiene questa interpretazione. Il tipo pittorico rivela la sua familiarità con i ritratti di Palma Vecchio dei cortigiani. Ciò è confermato dalle indagini scientifiche che dimostrano che il movimento del braccio destro corrispondeva originariamente al modello veneziano, ma fu poi sempre più modificato. Mentre l'anello sulla catena di Hendrickje le dà lo status di una donna sposata, la posa del cortigiano riflette il rapporto extraconiugale disapprovato dalla chiesa.
