Vent'anni separano queste due interpretazioni di Cristo ad Emmaus e dimostrano le revisioni creative di Rembrandt. La storia biblica racconta di un pasto che Cristo ha condiviso con due dei suoi discepoli dopo la sua risurrezione. I discepoli non riconoscono l'uomo come Cristo finché non rompe il pane e improvvisamente scompare. In questo lavoro precedente, Rembrandt ha trasmesso la scena come un evento piuttosto ordinario. I tre uomini circondano un piccolo tavolo mentre un cane affamato implora per scarti. Ma il drappo teatrale in alto a sinistra suggerisce che questa non è semplicemente una scena di vita quotidiana. I raggi di luce che emanano dalla testa di Cristo e la fatturazione del suo capo—come se una fonte interna di energia si irradia verso l’esterno—considerano che questo è un momento eccezionale.
