L'autorevolezza di Rembrandt fu dubitata sin dagli anni '20. Nel soggetto e nello stile il dipinto è tipico del cerchio immediato del maestro nel 1640; le attribuizioni a Govert Flinck e a Gerbrand van den Eeckhout, entrambi studiati sotto Rembrandt nel 1630, sono state proposte negli ultimi anni. Il gesto della figura dashing potrebbe essere stato adottato da quello del capitano in The Night Watch del 1642.
