L’identità del sitter è sconosciuta, come in molti ritratti di Rembrandt del 1630. Durante quel decennio ad Amsterdam il pittore è stato pressato con molte commissioni di ritratto, che ha gestito con l'uso occasionale di assistenti e diversi gradi di qualità nel suo lavoro. Alcuni critici rilevano la mano di un collaboratore in questo dipinto, ma la forte modellazione del volto, il delicato disegno del cappello, e l'immediatezza dell'espressione sono tipici dello stesso Rembrandt.
