Quando aveva diciotto anni, Rembrandt Peale dipinse un ritratto di Washington dalla vita in presenza di suo padre, Charles Willson Peale. Durante il resto della sua carriera, Rembrandt ha dimostrato una quasi ossessione per Washington e ha replicato questo famoso ritratto settantanove volte. L'ovale di pietra deriva dalla moda europea seicentesca per le case di pietra tromp l'oeil, un formato Peale può aver osservato durante i periodi di studio in Europa.
