In questo esempio, dipinto quando Rembrandt era di cinquantaquattro anni, l'artista non era asparente nel raffigurare i segni di invecchiamento in faccia, costruendo la vernice in alto rilievo per trasmettere la sua fronte solcata, i pesanti sacchetti sotto i suoi occhi, e il suo doppio mento. La recente rimozione di una vernice sintetica ha rivelato di più del metodo di lavoro di Rembrandt, mostrando, per esempio, come ha capovolto il pennello per incidere con il suo culo terminare i riccioli ruvidi che si riversano dal suo tappo.
