La data e la firma in fondo a questo foglio lo rendono uno dei pochi disegni in modo sicuro attribuito a Rembrandt. L'abbigliamento vagamente esotico degli uomini può essere ispirato dalla fantasia o dai costumi dei mercanti stranieri che erano una vista comune in Amsterdam del XVII secolo. La fluidità della penna trapunta flessibile è combinata con l'effetto atmosferico raggiunto con la penna più pesante. Rembrandt ha usato la penna canna per rielaborare i contorni della figura barbuta, rendendola più prominente.
