Ren Yi, figlio di un commerciante di riso, è stato addestrato in un negozio di ritratti. Ren sviluppò uno stile popolare riccamente colorato per figure e per dipinti a fiori e uccelli e paesaggi, diventando un artista leader a Shanghai nel 1870, con un grande cerchio di eminenti amici e studenti, come l'alfabeto Wu Changshi (1844-1927). Gru, fungo e pino sono emblemi di lunga vita, ma l'ambizione artistica di questo quadro imponente, tutti gli angoli e le parti montate, va oltre quello della tradizionale immagine di compleanno auspicio. La complessa struttura pittorica, formata da triangoli interbloccanti, sembra attingere al rapporto di figura e terra al cuore della scultura di tenuta, un'arte molto apprezzata nel XIX secolo. Ren può anche essere stato ispirato dalle forti silhouette sovrapposte su un terreno poco profondo visto in arte giapponese, in particolare schermi.
