Durante tutta la sua carriera Ren ha esplorato le qualità espressive di vari modi pennello. Negli anni 1880 era particolarmente interessato agli effetti del lavabo colorato e sciolto, spazzola impressionistica, e ha creato immagini come questa ventola morbidamente spazzolata. Il tema di Chan (Zen) della sua natura di herding verso l'illuminazione, come un ragazzo guida il suo bufalo di strada, deriva da illustrazioni Song-dynasty.
