Uno degli artisti più talentuosi della scuola del Connecticut, Moulthrop deve aver acquisito la sua evidente conoscenza della ritrattistica inglese studiando libri e stampe. Il suo ritratto esagerato della signora Perit "s coiffure e copricapo è in sintonia con immagini simili nelle placche di moda contemporanea. Potrebbe anche aver studiato dipinti di Ralph Earl, le cui opere possono essere viste anche nella collezione del Museo.
