Richard Cosway fu il pittore in miniatura più alla moda in Inghilterra dal 1780 all'inizio del 1800. Cosway ha costruito una carriera di successo lusingando i suoi soggetti, e attraverso la sua tecnica innovativa di utilizzare pigmenti trasparenti che ha permesso alla luminosità naturale dell'avorio di brillare. Nel 1781, il flamboyant Cosway sposò l'artista inglese Maria Hadfield, amico e confidente di Thomas Jefferson. A Londra, la coppia era al centro di un cerchio culturale d'élite, tra cui celebrità come il principe del Galles (il futuro re Giorgio IV), un mecenate di arti che è stato dipinto quasi cinquanta volte da Cosway. William Pitt the Younger fu uno statista britannico di primo piano che, all'età di 24 anni, divenne il più giovane Primo Ministro del Regno Unito nel 1783.
