Diez , chi era Schönberg’s alunno , scrisse in una lettera che questo era uno dei due ritratti in cui gerstl lo dipinse 1906 , quasi certamente dopo che diez era tornato quell'autunno da una sistemazione estiva a roma . Diez afferma che il ritratto originariamente doveva essere una commissione , organizzato da schönberg , che apparentemente aveva deciso di aiutare gerstl a ottenere lavoro nella sua cerchia . Diez ricorda che l'opera è stata dipinta in uno studio temporaneo , la cui descrizione corrisponde a uno sopra il café sperl in gumpendorferstraße 11 , vienna vi che potrebbe essere stata quella che gerstl occupava in quel momento .
