Schönberg si trova in cima a sinistra, Zemlinsky seduto sotto di lui vicino a Ida e Mathilde. La terza coppia non è identificata, ma può essere Karl Horwitz (studente di Schönberg) e sua moglie, Mizzi, che erano in luna di miele. Uno sfondo soleggiato, applicato con un coltello da tavolo, condivide i ricchi ocra e verdi che caratterizzano i ritratti Gmunden di Gerstl del 1908. Qui, però, Gerstl ha allungato le sue tecniche in evoluzione, distorcendo i volti, in modo che indistinguibili si chiudano, diventano gradualmente riconoscibili come lo spettatore tira indietro.
