Questo, il dipinto più noto di Bonheur, mostra il mercato dei cavalli tenutosi a Parigi sul Boulevard de l’Hôpital alberato, vicino all’asilo di Salpêtrière, che è visibile sullo sfondo sinistro. Per un anno e mezzo Bonheur ha disegnato lì due volte alla settimana, vestindosi da uomo per scoraggiare l'attenzione. Bonheur fu ben stabilito come pittore animale quando il dipinto debuttò al Salone di Parigi del 1853, dove ricevette grandi lodi. Arrivando allo schema finale, l'artista ha tratto ispirazione da George Stubbs, Théodore Gericault, Eugène Delacroix, e dall'antica scultura greca: si riferiva a The Horse Fair come il suo "freddo di Panthenon".
