Sposato nel 1827, Ruth e Samuel Shute erano una squadra marito e moglie di pittori di ritratto itinerante che lavorano in New England e New York. Anche se inizialmente dipinte indipendentemente, la coppia collaborò su una serie di ritratti di olio e acquerello a partire dal 1832. Poco si sa della sitter, che viene identificata solo dalla carta di chiamata nella mano destra. Un’iscrizione sul retro rivela il contributo di ogni artista all’opera, che è stata “Drawn by R.W. Shute and Painted by S. A. Shute”. La coppia materiali caratteristicamente mescolati, che combina grafite, acquerello, e foglio d'oro applicato, aggiunto qui per emulare i gioielli di Miss Parker.
