Questo dipinto fu pensato per essere di Jan Vermeer (1632-1675) all'inizio del XX secolo, quando passò dal grande commerciante d'arte Joseph Duveen (1869-1939) ad uno dei donatori più importanti del Met, Jules S. Bache (1861-1944). Ricorda i numerosi studi di giovani anonimi del pittore fiammingo Michiel Sweerts (1618-1664), ma la maggior parte degli studiosi oggi associa il dipinto a Bourdon, pittore francese che ha studiato a Roma.
