Bourdon era uno dei primi seguaci di Nicolas Poussin più ardenti, e spesso è andato a grandi lunghezze per mostrare familiarità con i riferimenti classici Poussin era pionieristico per la pittura. In questo paesaggio rigorosamente strutturato, Bourdon citò opere d’arte classica antiche e contemporanee: la grande statua di un cavallo a sinistra cita direttamente una statua trovata sulla Quirinal Hill di Roma, mentre il gruppo di ballerini a destra proviene dal Bacchanal di Poussin (ca. 1632–33; National Gallery, Londra).
