I paesaggi di Sébillot riflettono la sua passione per la sua regione natale della Bretagna nel nord della Francia. Le forme crocifisso-come degli alberi in questo lavoro evocano le nozioni popolari di profonda, non isolata spiritualità di Breton. Durante una spedizione di pittura piovosa nel 1877, l'artista trascorse il tempo documentando storie tradizionali raccontate dai contadini locali – un'esperienza che ha ispirato la sua carriera successiva come studioso del folklore francese. Il figlio di Sébillot inviò questa foto sul treno Merci che andò in tour negli Stati Uniti nel 1949, riempito di doni da cittadini francesi grati per l'aiuto americano sulla scia della seconda guerra mondiale.
