Søren “Emil” Carlsen è stato un pittore esperto di ritratti e paesaggi, ma è stato forse meglio conosciuto per le sue oscure nature morte che ricordano l’artista francese del XVIII secolo Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin. La maggior parte delle nature morte di Carlsen presentava soggetti “cucina” di bollitori e giochi, ma ha anche rappresentato fiori e altri motivi. Nato a Copenaghen, Danimarca, Carlsen ha studiato architettura presso la Royal Academy danese. Immigrato a Chicago nel 1872 e lavorato come progettista architettonico e come insegnante d'arte presso l'Art Institute di Chicago. Dopo aver studiato a Parigi, si trasferì a San Francisco per servire come direttore della California School of Design. Dopo quattro anni, tornò in Oriente e nel 1905 acquistò una casa estiva in Connecticut.
