Fu dipinto nel 1860 da una famosa foto di Garibaldi che Gustave Le Gray aveva scattato. Nello stesso anno, quest'ultimo si fermò a Palermo mentre viaggiava verso est con Alexandre Dumas dopo la notizia che la città era stata conquistata. Era il ‘Liberatore’ di persona a commissionare Le Gray la fotografia che doveva diventare una vera icona patriottica. In questa tela, Lo Forte ha eseguito un tipo di ‘pittura fotogenica’ che lo aveva già reso famoso a Palermo qualche tempo prima.
