Frederick Billings acquistò questo dipinto presso la National Academy of Design di New York nel maggio 1879, la stessa occasione in cui acquisì la Maine Coast di Nicoll. Samuel Colman è stato un artista di molti talenti e alleanze la cui carriera ha abbracciato un certo numero di tendenze artistiche disparate. Era uno dei primi membri della Hudson River School, come studente di Asher Durand. Divenne socio dell'Accademia Nazionale nel 1855 e membro nel 1862. Ha esposto ampiamente, e fatto viaggi di studio in Europa nel 1860 e 1871. Negli ultimi anni della sua carriera è stato anche coinvolto nella prima partnership di Louis Comfort Tiffany, a partire dal 1878 circa. La fluenza di Colman in stile esotico era congeniale a gustosi, clienti e collezionisti in quel periodo.
