Negli anni Settanta, quando il ritratto fu dipinto, Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) si voltò leggermente a sinistra, gli occhi diretti allo spettatore. Ha capelli grigi sottili che si estendono al suo colletto e un baffi grigio e goatee. Solo la sua testa è finita; un lavaggio grigio sottile descrive allentatamente un colletto semplice e piatto. Hobbes nacque a Malmesbury, Wiltshire. Nonostante l'umile parentela, si alzò a prominenza come brillante linguista e autore del libro del 1651Leviatano, un lavoro fondamentale della teoria del contratto sociale che sosteneva il governo guidato da un forte sovrano. Come realista fu costretto a fuggire dall'Inghilterra quando la guerra civile scoppiò nel 1642, e risiedette in Francia fino alla fine della guerra nel 1651. Era un amico di Cooper, che ha dipinto la sua miniatura almeno due volte.
