Anche se meglio conosciuto per i suoi paesaggi spazzanti, Samuel Bourne fece diverse immagini di gente locale quando viaggiò nella città di Darjeeling e le sue foreste circostanti nel 1869. Qui, Bourne ha fotografato quattro Bhooteas, popoli di montagna da un'area dell'Himalaya nel Tibet meridionale, vestiti di bakhus, i capi in stile mantello sciolti con maniche piene che erano comuni alla regione di Bhote. Anche se l'immagine di Bourne ha illustrato un gruppo caratteristico di Bhooteas per un pubblico britannico, i suoi soggetti rimangono assertivamente individuali, in posa per la fotocamera con notevole auto-possessione.
