Nel 1824 Samuel Palmer (1805-1881) fu introdotto al visionario poeta e artista William Blake (1757-1827), la cui influenza lo portò via dal realismo strettamente osservato verso un atteggiamento più fantasioso e spirituale nei confronti dei suoi paesaggi. Questo lavoro mostra la campagna locale di Shoreham nel Sussex, che Palmer ha descritto come un 'Valle della Vision'. Nei suoi paesaggi, Palmer stava cercando una sintesi del mondo spirituale e naturale. In una lettera ad un amico ha scritto: ‘Ho visto come nello spirito, tali nooks, catturato tali scorci del twilight solenne profumato e incantato... come passato thro’ l’intensa purificazione che separa il calore trasmutante dell’alchimia infabulante dell’anima ... come con la luna scongelata tra costellazioni, e varietà di meno glorie partecipanti, il pompe regale e l’alternanza trainante.
