Charles Bray era un produttore di nastri prospero che possedeva il giornale Coventry Herald. Ha usato la ricchezza generata dalle sue imprese per stabilire scuole pubbliche non settarie e per cercare di portare a cambiamenti benefici in molti altri aspetti della società. Aiutò a fondare la Coventry Labourers & Artisans Co-operative Society che forniva giardini per uomini di lavoro e un negozio di coop. Bray sposò Caroline (Cara) Hennell nel 1836. La loro casa, Rosehill, divenne un centro di pensiero radicale sulla religione e sulla politica. Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot) era amici stretti con i Brays.
