Lynch, una figura importante nella vita sociale e letteraria di New York City a metà del XIX secolo, era un autore e poeta, nonché un pittore e scultore dilettanti. La sua casa di New York è diventata un luogo di incontro vivace per artisti e literati, uno dei primi saloni in America. Tra gli artisti che hanno visitato il salone di Lynch c'era George Peter Alexander Healy (1813–94), che potrebbe averla presentata al ritrattista francese Dubourjal. Il bel cross-hatching in faccia e sfondo riflette la sua esperienza come pittore di miniature. Le delicate caratteristiche della sitter sono accuratamente descritte e movimentate con piccoli tocchi di colore. Il resto del disegno è reso in toni sottili di bianco, grigio e nero.
