Come la tribù Yokuts della Valle di San Joaquin, a sud di Sacramento, queste donne procurano e trasportano il seme di erba, un'importante fonte di cibo. Gli acquerelli si basano su disegni realizzati dall'artista del sondaggio Edward Kern, ma adattati per l'uso come incisioni nelle informazioni multivolume di Henry Rowe Schoolcraft per quanto riguarda la storia, le condizioni e le prospettive delle tribù indiane degli Stati Uniti. Nato a Brunswick, Maine, nel 1808, Eastman era un pittore, nonché un ufficiale dell'esercito statunitense. Ha ricevuto la sua formazione artistica all'USMA a West Point. Ben noto per paesaggi e raffigurazioni di post militari, la sua reputazione poggia su dipinti descrittivi e documentari della vita di nativi americani.
