Questo dipinto raffigura Budai, una amata figura buddista semi-storica conosciuta come Hotei in Giappone. Anche se l'opera era tradizionalmente associata ad un artista noto come Ikei Shūtoku, presumibilmente un seguace del celebre pittore d'inchiostro medievale Sesshū Tōyō, si ritiene che sia stato fatto nel XIX secolo. Questo ultimo lavoro entrò nella collezione del Met nel 1914 insieme a quasi duecento opere d'arte giapponesi e cinesi della collezione di Charles Stewart Smith (1832-1909), un Trustee del Museo. Smith fu principalmente un collezionista di dipinti europei, ma acquisì anche molte opere d'arte giapponesi e cinesi negli ultimi due decenni della sua vita, dopo che lui e la sua terza moglie vennero in Giappone nel 1892.
