Shitao arrivò a Pechino nel 1690 per cercare il patronato imperiale. Presto prese Boerdu (1649–1708), bisnonno del fondatore di Qing Nuerhachi (1559–1626), come suo discepolo nella pittura. Fu attraverso Boerdu che Shitao contribuì a questo lavoro congiunto con il preeminente pittore Wang Hui, che lasciò la sua iscrizione sulla roccia. La rappresentazione tama di Shitao di bambù e orchide mostra il suo rispetto per il gusto cortese ortodosso. Nella sua iscrizione, scritta in scrittura clericale arcaica, ha composto un poema su bambù e orchidee, poi aggiunto questo postscript: Mr. Wen [Boerdu] mi ha mandato un po 'di carta e mi ha chiesto di antidolorifici e bambù, aggiungendo che un maestro pittore completerebbe la pittura con immagini di roccia. Perciò ho lasciato un'area vuota per il suo tocco finale magico. Inviato per l'istruzione del signor Wen. cat. no. 77
