Shitao, uno dei maestri paesaggistici più eccezionali del suo tempo, è stato anche appassionato di pittura di bambù. Su questo monumentale lavoro, cita una descrizione di Su Che (1039–1112) di Wen Tong (1018–1079), il pittore di bambù della Song Settentrionale: "Egli si affaccia in mezzo bambù al mattino, rimane in compagnia di bambù la sera, beve e mangia in mezzo al bambù, riposa e dorme all'ombra del bambù; osservando tutti i diversi aspetti del bambù" La firma di Shitao è il suo sigillo, che cita un detto di Wen Tong: "Come posso vivere un giorno senza questo signore!" Durante il Settecento, lo stile di pittura di bambù di Shitao fu praticato dai membri degli Otto Eccentrici di Yangzhou.
