Il sitter per questo dipinto fu il Reverendo William Laud (1573–1645), arcivescovo di Canterbury dal 1633 al 1640. Questo dipinto è uno dei numerosi ritratti molto simili di Laud che Van Dyck e il suo studio ha prodotto. Le copie dello studio erano pratiche comuni all'epoca. Il coinvolgimento del maestro artista variava, ma è probabile che Van Dyck dipinse le mani e il volto qui, lasciando il resto del dipinto per assistenti di studio da finire. Gli studiosi pensano che un ritratto nella raccolta del Fitzwilliam Museum all'Università di Cambridge sia la versione principale.
