Nella mitologia greca, la ninfa Hesperia era uno degli Hesperides il cui compito era quello di badare al giardino degli dei e con l'aiuto di una guardia di drago un albero che produceva mele d'oro. Questo acquerello è una piccola rielaborazione di un dipinto ad olio che Frank Dicksee ha esposto alla Royal Academy nel 1887. L'artista, che è stato insegnato da Lord Leighton e Sir John Everett Millais, ha raggiunto un notevole successo ufficiale ed è stato meglio conosciuto per le sue romantiche immagini storicizzanti che hanno continuato la tradizione figurativa dei Pre-Raphaeliti ben nell'era edoardiana.
