James Cruikshank (D. 1830), di Langley Park, Montrose, Forfarshire (oggi contea di Angus), è stato un uomo d'affari che ha fatto una grande fortuna dalle piantagioni di zucchero nelle Indie occidentali britanniche. Nel 1792 sposò Margaret Helen (d. 1823), figlia del Rev. Dr. Alexander Gerard di Aberdeen. Avevano sei figli. Nessun record per la commissione di questi ritratti pendenti è stato trovato, ma una datazione tra il 1805 e il 1808 è stato suggerito per motivi stilistici. Raeburn ha preso un approccio molto semplice ai suoi sitter e ha sviluppato una tecnica distintiva in cui i dettagli ampiamente spazzolati e forti contrasti ondulati di luce e scuro danno alle sue figure una qualità scultorea. Nel 1801, Joseph Farington descrisse i ritratti di Raeburn come “un aspetto insolitamente vero della natura”.
