Guthrie si stabilì a Cockburnspath nel maggio del 1883. Il villaggio e la campagna circostante gli permise di dipingere il paesaggio all'aria aperta, e tentò di formare una colonia di artista nel villaggio di Berwickshire, molto simile ai suoi compatrioti francesi avevano stabilito a Barbizon e Grez-sur-Loing. La maggior parte dei Glasgow Boys risiedeva qui per brevi incantesimi tra il 1883 e il 1886. Durante i mesi estivi era consuetudine vedere artisti punteggiati in tutto il villaggio con i loro cavalletti accesi sotto grandi ombrelloni.
