L'ambizioso dipinto di Reynolds del celebre attore David Garrick fu uno dei più importanti della sua intera carriera. Il soggetto era probabilmente l'idea di Garrick: una parodia giocosa della storia classica di Ercole scegliendo tra piacere e virtù, progettata per enfatizzare la versatilità di Garrick. Reynolds presenta le figure di Commedia e Tragedia nello stile di Antonio Correggio e Guido Reni. Correggio era noto per il suo uso seducente di colore, Reni per i rigorosi di linea.
