Il pittore danese Carlsen immigrato negli Stati Uniti nel 1872. La sua vasta formazione artistica era tutta europea, a partire dall'École des Beaux-Arts de Copenhagen, e poi dalla Royal Academy danese e dall'Académie Julian. Contò gli impressionisti Childe Hassam, J. Alden Weir, e John La Farge tra i suoi colleghi più vicini. Carlsen stabilì la sua reputazione principalmente su composizioni di Chardin, sensuous still-life e delicati paesaggi atmosferici e paesaggi marini, come l'esempio attuale. Anche se non ufficialmente membro del gruppo Cos Cob, l'artista mantenne stretti legami con i pittori della colonia. Nel 1905 costruì una casa e uno studio a Falls Village, nel nord-ovest del Connecticut, mantenendo la residenza a New York City.
